Lip is calculated as the horizontal distance from the point the furthest from the center line of the rail to the gauge point on the same face. When the gauge point is not seen by the optical measurement system (as can happen when there is a large lip), the lip may be calculated relative to the gauge point of the corresponding unworn profile.
