Data points on the rail head correspond very closely to the original measurements. A user-defined thinning factor is applied when the rail is modeled. A typical thinning factor is 0.0254 mm. (0.001 in.) That is, in a series of adjacent points on the head perimeter, if all of the interior points lie within 0.0254 mm. of the line connecting the end-points, then the interior points are dropped. If the thinning factor is set to 0.0, all the original points are kept.
