Notes on Profile Ascii Export Format

  1. Unknown measurement values are expressed as 1.0e38.

  2. Profiles are oriented vertically. The profile centerline is aligned with the Y axis.

  3. For modeled profiles, the origin is the intersection point of the straight upper portions of the base of the unworn profile.

  4. In order to orient the profiles to track level, rotate them towards the gauge face by the measured cant angle.

  5. Data points on the rail head correspond very closely to the original measurements. A user-defined thinning factor is applied when the rail is modeled. A typical thinning factor is 0.0254 mm. (0.001 in.) That is, in a series of adjacent points on the head perimeter, if all of the interior points lie within 0.0254 mm. of the line connecting the end-points, then the interior points are dropped. If the thinning factor is set to 0.0, all the original points are kept.
