Net gauge is track gauge minus gauge wear on both sides.
Net gauge is only calculated if track gauge and gauge wear on a pair of opposite profiles can be calculated. The rail type must be known on both sides, and enough gauge face must be measured.
The net gauge measurement is useful to distinguish between changes in track gauge due to rail wear and changes caused by the condition of ties and fasteners.
