One geometry or combined run can be aligned to another automatically by matching data in geometry channels. Two choices are available: "fine" and "coarse" alignment. "Fine" alignment on geometry uses curvature and gauge channels in the two runs as a basis for alignment. Potentially, it provides the most precise result of any of the automated alignment tools in Rangecam. However, it cannot always correct extreme misalignments. The fine alignment may not succeed if runs are initially misaligned by 0.10 mile or more, for example. The "coarse" alignment tool is provided for such extreme cases. If runs are badly misaligned, it is recommended to try the coarse geometry alignment first, to achieve a rough alignment. Then use fine alignment for the final result. If the initial alignment is fairly close, you may skip the coarse alignment step.
